Why Japan Does the Art of the Cocktail Better Than America (Guest Post)

March 8, 2017

This article is written by St. John Frizell and has been shared with the author’s permission. It was originally published in Men’s Journal.

Inside a tall, bland office tower in downtown Sapporo is the greatest drinking experience you’ve never heard about. The bar is quiet, the drinks are perfect, and the bartender is irreproachable. To get there, you need to take an elevator to the second floor and walk through a quiet, brightly lit hallway. Except for a sign on the door, you would hardly know it’s there. But stepping into the tiny dark Bar Ikkei is like crossing the threshold of a shrine: You’ve entered a space where ritual is king, and now you’re part of the ceremony.

Introducing: the Bibulous

March 5, 2017

Bibulous
adjective | bib·u·lous | (bib-yuh-luh s)

a: to be fond of drink
b: of, relating to, or marked by the consumption of alcoholic beverages

I’m so excited to announce the new name for this blog, the Bibulous. As you can see above, bibulous means to be fond of drink, which I think perfectly describes how I feel about what I do and the cocktails that I write about. I’m going to be creating even more content and sharing it here: not only my 50 Drinks Around The World project, but bar guides, cocktail recipes, and trip reports from my travels. Let me know what you think of the new name and anything else you see on the blog.

Thanks for following along on this journey!

Hot Cider – The Perch – Belfast, Northern Ireland

February 27, 2017

Last week, my brother and I spent a few days in Ireland. After taking in all that Dublin had to offer, including a visit to a hidden cocktail club, we decided we would take a road trip on our last full day. Undeterred by driving on the wrong side of the road and without a particular activity or destination in mind, we left Dublin and started driving north.

The Cobblestone – Vintage Cocktail Club – Dublin, Ireland

February 23, 2017

I just got back from a “Brocation” with my brother – 4 days in Ireland. For both of us, it was our first time to Ireland, and I was especially excited to see the well-known drinking culture firsthand. My brother is not much of a drinker, but perhaps being around all the merry Irish got him in the spirit. He agreed to come with me to a speakeasy in the heart of Dublin.

One Flight up the Monk – Top of the Monk – Asheville, NC

February 12, 2017

I found myself in Asheville, North Carolina for work recently. Asheville is located in western North Carolina, nestled just east of Tennessee at the foot of both the Great Smoky mountains. With a few meetings spaced over two days, I found myself with one night free, but I had one small problem. (more…)

Crematorium – Orphanage Cocktail Emporium – Cape Town, South Africa

January 17, 2017

By New Year’s Day, I had already been in South Africa for over a week and had my fair share of beer and cocktails, both standard and unusual. Although the endless drinking and fine dining was starting to wear on me, I was determined to make it to the Orphanage Cocktail Emporium, a cocktail bar I had looked up in advance of the trip. The Orphanage is on the corner of Orphan Street in the heart of Cape Town, so named because of a boy’s orphanage opened nearly 100 years ago just down the street.

Pomegranate Mojito – Bungalow – Camps Bay, Cape Town

On one of our first few nights in Cape Town, we had a late dinner planned downtown. With a few hours to kill, we decided to meet up with some newly made friends for a drink. Armed with only an address of where to meet, we grabbed an uber and began a scenic drive towards Camps Bay, a beautiful area of Cape Town on the base of the mountains overlooking the ocean. With the sun hanging low in the sky, our driver pulled up to Bungalow and we hopped out and headed towards the white cabanas.
